How to encourage independent thinking in your child - Sanskruti Vidyasankul

How to encourage independent thinking in your child?

Independent thinking is the capability to think for oneself and make decisions autonomously. To be independent, one must be able to think strategically, think creatively, and learn new skills. It can be a difficult skill to master because it requires one to think in an unbiased and original way, which is often difficult when the world around us is so heavily influenced by other people’s opinions.

Needless to say, independent thinking is important for individuals from different walks of life and a variety of career fields such as science, education, business, and management. We have observed a pattern of students’ responses in our primary school in Boisar, Palghar. Students who are not independent thinkers often rely on others for answers. They might be afraid of making mistakes. They might believe that following someone else’s advice will make them more successful.

Where there is a will, there is a way. As parents, and teachers, you can always encourage children to think independently, and creatively. Here are some tips to follow!

Let your child learn from mistakes

Children are not perfect and they need to learn from their mistakes. By allowing children to make mistakes and learn from them, they can develop independent thinking skills. This way they will become more confident, independent thinkers in the future.

Give them the power of decision making

Let your child make small decisions about their life by giving them the power to decide what to wear, which subject to study, and what to eat for better independent thinking. Children who are given the power of decision-making in their lives tend to have better self-esteem and self-confidence. They also develop better problem-solving skills. They also become more aware of their surroundings and how they can impact other people’s lives.

Encourage your child to develop self-sufficiency skills

Moms and dads, have you ever thought of how your child’s brain will develop if they are not allowed to do chores like bed making, grocery shopping and home cleaning? The answer is that your child won’t develop a good work ethic and will be dependent on you for everything. If you want your child to be independent in the long run, then you should start teaching them to take care of themselves as soon as they are old enough.

Avoid comparison

Independent thinking helps children to come up with solutions to problems they face. However, parents often compare their children with other children to find out why they are not performing well in school or at home. This ultimately leads to frustration and disappointment for both the parents and the child. Parents need to recognise that their child is different from other children and encourage them to think differently without comparing them with others.

Motivate your child to participate in activities

Children are often not born with a natural desire to participate in activities. It is up to parents and caregivers to encourage them to do so. An active, healthy lifestyle has been linked with increased cognitive function, better memory, and enhanced independent thinking.

Let your child express their feelings

The best way to develop independent thinking in children is to allow them to express themselves. There are many ways to do this, but the most effective way is through words. Children can be encouraged to write letters or journal entries. This will help them learn how to express themselves without worrying about mistakes and feel more independent and free to express themselves.
