How postponing Class 12th exams will affect the academic year?
As our country is facing the second wave of Covid-19, the Union Government has taken a decision over board exams. The exams for the 10th CBSE Boards are now cancelled, and the decision over 12th Boards is pending. The board exams were scheduled to be conducted from May 04th to June 15th, 2020. However, the current situation of covid has put a big hurdle in the board examinations. In a press release, CBSE has informed that they will review the Covid-19 situation on June 01st, 2021 and take the decision to the 12th Boards.
Well, the delay in examinations is going to have a ripple effect in the education sector as it will lead to delay in college admission application, entrance exams such as NEET, JEE, IIT and more. In the coming academic year, students are likely to get less time for learning. However, about 15 Lakhs+ students write exams every year. Mass gathering at this level is a nightmare for our country right now. Sanskruti World School, being the best CBSE school in Palghar, Boisar, applauds this decision as nothing is more important than staying at home and saving lives. In this covid wave, children are also getting infected by the virus, and it would be really risky to conduct such examinations at a vast level.
Times are tough for both students and teachers. The problems that teachers report is that they are not able to gauge how much the children understand through online learning. Teachers are conducting regular lectures accompanied by assignments, surprise tests and more. Still, the accurate picture of students’ learning status is not clear to many. This also happened last year when the countrywide lockdown started. New academic sessions, cancellation of examinations or online multiple-choice question papers are big challenges for teachers to evaluate how much a child has understood. When it comes to testing, online examinations are not a substitute for live examinations for sure.
Another concern is about the consequences of postponing the exams. Now that most of the state boards and CBSE board have decided to take examinations in June, this is a problematic situation for students. Imagine if the exams take place by the end of June, the results will be out at the earliest possible time ( let’s say by the start of August). Now, this time was supposed to be when students go ahead with the college selection and start their new batches. Delay in exams, delay in results, delay in college admissions – all these factors will encourage to shorten the syllabus and focus on key concepts to cover up for the academic year. This is precisely the scenario where students know everything and know nothing. Clearly, the quality of education gets compromised under such circumstances.
We are often asked about the examination and students’ academic challenges from the past one year. We understand times are tough, and it’s not a win-win scenario. Things will be compromised in life, and in this case, unfortunately, it’s about students learning and the future. The good news is that most of the competitive exams have removed the criteria of 75% in board results. This has reduced the hurdles for students aspiring to give attempts along with the 12th boards. Students are getting more time to prepare along with boards. However, it is worth noticing that this delay is leaving most students uninterested in learning. They say when times are challenging, decisions are about choosing the bad above the worst. In the present scenario, staying home is the only sensible option we all have.
